What are the similarities and differences between a community-driven product development process and a traditional product development process within a firm?

A community-driven product development process creates intrinsic value in the product or service because customers feel more connected to the end result. Traditional products might be more lucrative because they can mass produce the product and provide more outlets. Community driven relies more on the idea of small market customers all over the country or world who only by products or services because they don't want to be like everyone else.
